Gunner: A Whimsical Display Font for Digital Creativity

As I was building out a creative portfolio site for a local graphic designer, I wanted something that felt fresh and modern. That’s when I landed on Gunner, a modern, whimsical and wavy display font. The first thing I noticed was how the curves and waves of the typeface added character without being too over the top. It fit perfectly with the client's brand identity — playful yet professional.
I tested it in the hero section, placing it over a full-width image of the designer at work. The Gunner font stood out against the background while still maintaining enough legibility to be readable on both desktop and mobile screens. It wasn’t just about looking good; it had to feel right. And it did.

Next up was an online store for handmade jewelry. The goal was to create a sense of elegance and charm. I tried using Gunner in the main banner headline, and it immediately gave the site a more personal, artisanal vibe. It worked well as a display font for promotional banners, especially when paired with a clean sans-serif body text like Open Sans or Lato.
The wavy nature of Gunner made it ideal for highlighting special offers or new arrivals. I used it sparingly — only for the main headlines and call-to-action buttons. This helped maintain visual balance and ensured the typography didn’t overwhelm the product images.
Gunner in Course Sales Pages
When designing a course sales page for a digital marketing coach, I needed a font that could convey both professionalism and creativity. Gunner was a natural fit. Its whimsical style brought a friendly, approachable feel to the landing page, which aligned with the coach’s personality.
I used Gunner for the headline, “Master Your Brand in 30 Days,” and then paired it with a simple serif font for the supporting text. The contrast between the two fonts created a nice hierarchy and guided the user’s eye from the big title down to the details. It also helped break up the content visually, making the page easier to scan.

On a blog redesign project, I experimented with Gunner for article headers. It worked best for shorter titles where the unique shape of the letters didn’t interfere with readability. I avoided using it for long paragraphs or body text since its display font nature isn’t optimized for extended reading sessions.

One of the most interesting use cases came when creating a digital brand kit for a small boutique. The client wanted everything — from logos to social media graphics — to feel cohesive and on-brand. Gunner became the go-to font for all the decorative elements, including logo text, taglines, and promotional materials.
I made sure to check if Gunner had webfont availability and proper licensing for commercial use. It did, which made it a safe choice for a client who would be using the brand assets across multiple platforms. The font’s versatility allowed us to use it in both print and digital formats, giving the brand a consistent look everywhere.

Finally, I used Gunner on a campaign landing page for a new app launch. The headline, “Experience the Future of Productivity,” was crafted in Gunner, and it instantly set the tone for the rest of the page. The font’s modern and whimsical qualities helped differentiate the app from competitors and made the message more memorable.
I paired Gunner with a neutral sans-serif font for the subheadings and body copy. This kept the design balanced and prevented the display font from becoming the focal point of every section. The result was a clean, engaging layout that encouraged users to take action.
